My three friends Mr Self-Critic, Mr Perfectionist and Mr Procrastinator (he was last of course) came to stay this week. And like any unwelcome guests, they were self-inviting and I kind of wished they would leave. However I know why they came.
This week I have the chance to live life on the edge by developing something for work that hasn’t been done by me or anyone I know. Initially I jumped on my pogo stick of opportunity and catapulted myself to the highest of thoughts and positivity and within 24 hours by the time the pogo came back to earth they were all waiting there for me.
Mr Perfectionist says this; ‘remember you don’t like doing new things. That means the unknown which is risk for you. New things mean you can’t control the outcome, just stick to your knitting love’.
Mr Self-Critic says this;’ ‘I’m not sure what you were thinking when you offered to do that, but actually there are people out there that can do it better than you, they know more and have way more experience, you make me laugh! The audacity of you!’
Mr Procrastinator says this; ‘it’s ok I have a plan, don’t listen to those other two fools, just do nothing, put it off, lay back down, get off your pogo stick. You will be safe with me’.
I say ‘Yes! How right, I will be safe, I will not be judged or critisiced, I will not be open to making mistakes, let’s call the whole thing off. What is the point putting yourself out there anyway?’
We all have unwelcome house guests, just lurking waiting to slip in and stay. We can ask them to go or we can ask them what they want. They do serve a purpose in our world. They want to protect us from shame, blame, critique, hurt, suffering. They want us to be loved and successful. They want to remind us of our past life, our conditioning and upbringing. Once we understand that they are our allies then we can get them to work for us. Once we see that they have bought with them a plate of our own fear, denial, shame, criticism we can begin to see through what they are trying to do. To protect us, from ourselves.
The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
Practice for today: Your purpose in life is to be as talented as you can. We all have these voices, thoughts. If you have one today ask it what it wants, why it came to visit your guesthouse this day.
