The other day after one of my meltdowns I wondered if I was getting any closer to enlightenment at all. I still get irritated and peed off with certain people and behaviors, still carry a few war wounds from someones actions, still can hold resentment. The only trouble now with all this yoga I’m much more aware of it all.
When we get annoyed with someone it is because we feel that we are unique and right and they are wrong, rude, unthoughtful, and x ( fill in the blank). We are very creative at forming invisible barriers between us and the idiot that annoys us. Forming a barrier is a justification for our behaviour, it means we can hold onto our opinion a little bit longer, or for all our life if we choose.
What would be a more sophisticated and stress free way to live would be to realise that the person who is annoying you has the same needs, and fears as you do. When we realise that essentially we are all the same then we can practice a bit more kindness to ourselves and those around us.
Actually you don’t have to condone others bad behavior or even agree with it. This is just a practice to free yourself up and bit and move from contraction to expansion.
……..it’s called Metta or loving kindness.
Close your eyes.
Listen to your breath coming in and out.
Say to yourself
May I be free from fear
May I be free from danger
May I be healthy
May I be happy
May I live my life in peace
Now visualise in your mind’s eye the person you have created a boundary with.
Say to yourself
May you be free from fear
May you be free from danger
May you be healthy
May you be happy
May you live your life in peace
Practice for today. Loving yourself is the first step to loving others. If you have time just say the words either to help you with your problem, to send love to someone who needs it, to give thanks to someone who has guided you or to a stranger on the street.
