Have Thai Will Fly

My experience of Thai Massage with Li.
I had no idea what a Thai massage was until I got invited to try one this week. What a journey, what an experience! I am on an endeavour to try new therapies and the number one stop was here.
Here is some background to this 2500 year old bodywork therapy.
Thai Massage is a traditional healing therapy of the Thai art known as ‘Nuad Boran’.

This form of massage has also been called Thai Yoga Massage, Thai massage and Thai yoga therapy. All of these terms are used to refer to the same style of body work which has been practised in Thailand for centuries. The massage incorporates yoga, acupressure and reflexology.Based on Ayurvedic medicine and yoga, this art form has been handed down through an unbroken chain of masters for centuries and continues to be practised today across Thailand. It is believed Thai massage originated in India with its roots deeply grounded in Buddhism. As Buddhism migrated from India, this healing medicine spread with it.

Thai massage, like most eastern methods and practices, is a technique used to give an experience of the total body. It is similar to acupressure and shiatsu combined with stretches and yogic postures. The treatment involves the use of thumbs, fingers, knees, elbows and feet. The massage works on ‘sen lines’ similar to meridians which run throughout the human body. It aims to promote wellness and vitality by helping the body return to a state of balance, harmony, flexibility and health. Even though Thai massage seemingly works only the body, the achievement of interconnection between body and mind make this ancient massage a complete healing.

I had my massage with Li at her beautiful house in Paekakariki and with the sound of the sea breaking and the sun coming in. The massage is done fully clothed and there are no oils used.Thai bodywork takes place on a thin mattress (futon) at ground level with the client wearing loose and comfortable clothing. Typically a massage will take 1-2 hours. Two hours is ideal as it allows for a full body treatment and the body can move into a special space of relaxation and meditation
Li started with my feet, alot of acupressure into the soles of the feet plus compression which I found very enjoyable. The massage travels up the thighs and in fact of lot of work is done on the thighs and lower legs.
The massage then became more yoga like with backbends, hip openers and forward folds. Li also did some lifting of my body to stretch out some of the muscle groups. The massage finished with some head work which put me into another place.
My feeling of the massage was that I had had an all over body workout. It was meditative in that it was quite repetitive in places and I enjoyed using breath work to soften into the massage rather than ‘stiffen’ up. I thought that Li used a great pressure and had wonderful transitions between parts of the body. I felt confident and relaxed in her presence as her loving kindness for her work shone through.
Interestingly the next day I felt like I had done a yoga workout. That feeling you get when you have worked your muscles. Hey might never need to go to a yoga class again!
If you haven’t experience a Thai massage I recommend you contact Li. • I am the other Li who have just experienced Li’s Thai massage. What can I say?? It was the massage I have never experienced before.

Start from the location – Li’s house. I was on the floor in the room facing the ocean with warm afternoon sun blissfully on me… I listened to the sound of waves and just went floating with it.

Li worked on my body from toe to top (not top to toe), back to front with the same dedication that she puts in her yoga practice. The massage covers the whole body, feet and head. At the end of massage, I was happily snoring away and didn’t want to get up.

It feels great even days after. I am looking forward to my next appointment.

Thanks so much, Li! And thanks to Gabrielle for providing this space for us to share our experience of goodness.

  • I am very blessed to have experienced Li’s Thai massage also. What an incredible experience! I have had many massages over the years, yet nothing like this. Li has this amazing gift of working with the body! The first thai massage I had with her I experienced an immediate clearing of blockage through my thighs (a blockage I didnt know I had, but boy what an awesome feeling as it left). The second thai massage I had from her, I was putty in her very experienced hands and woke up as she was leaving the room to get me some water. My body, mind and spirit felt amazing!!!!! Li has the whole package! I highly recommend her and know that you will come out of that experience floating in heaven as i did! Thanks Li
